Due to the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Tool Gauge is taking every precaution to keep our employees, their families, customers, and suppliers safe during this epidemic.

Based on the stay-at-home order from Governor Inslee on March 23, 2020, and the temporary shutdown of Boeing Puget Sound, Tool Gauge temporarily shut down from March 26 through April 16th.

As we plan to bring back partial crews to support non-Boeing Puget Sound shipments, Tool Gauge leadership and management teams have placed COVID-19 best practices to keep everyone safe and healthy while in the office and on factory floors. Best practices include prevention, protection and containment strategies:

Prevention

  • • Informed employees of COVID-19 symptoms to watch for through CDC approved fliers, signage, and updates posted on internal applications.
  • • Signage with enhanced PPE requirements has been posted throughout metals and plastics facilities near time clocks.
  • • Nitrile gloves, safety glasses, face masks, and hearing protection have been provided to all employees working.
  • • PPE are placed in optimal areas near doors and time clocks for distribution with clear explanations of proper usage.
  • • Common areas such as lunchrooms, bathrooms, conference rooms, and all doors will be cleaned 4 times daily. Cleaning logs have been implemented and placed in each area, requiring a date, time and employee number of when it was cleaned.
  • • All doors are to remain open to reduce exposure.
  • • Signs are posted throughout both facilities to encourage people to wash their hands frequently, using soap, and washing for a minimum of 20 seconds.

Protection

  • • Social distancing is in place, with a 6 ft separation policy in place. We’ve taped X’s and lines throughout both facilities indicating where people should stop when approaching work cells.
  • • Break times have been staggered to allow a minimum of 6 ft separation at lunch tables.
  • • Cleaning stations have been placed throughout offices and on the factory floors. Employees have quick access to cleaning equipment such as disinfectant wipes, paper towels, Lysol spray, etc.
  • • Implementation of self-check screening tools.
  • • Restricted all international business travel and any external meetings and personnel.
  • • Staff who can work remotely have been encouraged to do so.
  • • Communicate with all staff via email and internal applications on COVID-19 updates and temporary shutdown dates
  • Producing DtM Face Shields for Washington State, click here for DtM Face Shield assembly steps and instructions for use

Containment

  • • Mandated quarantine for employees testing positive for COVID-19.
  • • Identify and contact employees who may have been in contact with employee(s) displaying symptoms and mandate quarantine.
  • • Close contaminated work area or facility.
  • • Start disinfection procedures of contaminated areas.

Best practices have been distributed through multiple forms of communications via posted flyers in both metals and plastics divisions, internal applications and emails, and social media. We will continue to update our employees, customers, and suppliers of our best practices, temporary shutdown updates, and COVID-19 news in the Puget Sound region.

For more information on preventing the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses, visit the CDC or your state’s Department of Health website.

Gavin, when did you decide to first explore the option of becoming an apprentice through the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC)?
I first decided to enroll in the apprenticeship program when I heard about AJAC in my cad/cam class at emerald ridge high school. I went to the first meeting that AJAC had and met Tracy, where I learned about the program and found out that it could get me into an industry that needed new apprentices. At the time I was unemployed and thought that it was the best option for a job.

What has been your favorite course so far with AJAC?
We don’t really have courses other than stem 3, but my favorite part about that class is working on the lathe. I have a lathe at home and having that knowledge of knowing the basics really comes in handy in class. It makes me feel good knowing that I have knowledge on a machine that helps me be more efficient.

Have you been applying what you’ve learned in AJAC classes to work at Tool Gauge?
I apply a lot of the basics that I’ve learned in class at work, such as measuring with precision tools and deciphering of drawings. What I haven’t applied at work is using manual machines. I’ve used manual machines a few times but I’d rather learn on CNC machines at school.

You’re the first automation apprentice at Tool Gauge, what are you most looking forward to learning and working with?
I would like to learn how to setup and program the robotic arm on the lathes. Its complexity and usefulness are something that will ecentually be used more in the future. I’d like to get a head start and know how to use and monitor one.

How has your apprenticeship been so far through AJAC and at Tool Gauge?
My time in the AJAC program has been great. Fortunately, I like a physical job versus being on a computer all day. I’d recommend the program to other if they’re willing to work hard and be consistent.

Tool Gauge has been good so far. It’s a physical job which I like, but in a relaxed environment. I’ve learned a lot so far: the importance of being on time, every person in this organization is a vital part in the grand scheme of things, and vital machine information both in running and maintaining.

What are some of your goals/plans after your complete this apprenticeship?
My goals after completing the apprenticeship now are open ended, I don’t really have a concrete goal or idea of what I want to do. But working in cnc has expanded my knowledge of what I like in the job and what I don’t.

In the continued pursuit of implementing new technology and increasing automation throughout our plastics and metals division, Tool Gauge management and engineering are in the first phase of evaluating new cobots from Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR).

Robotic specialists from Olympus Controls were onsite in late November to demonstrate the capabilities of their MiR500, one of four MiR autonomous mobile robot (AMR) models.

The MiR cobot fleet is a cost-effective way to quickly automate internal transportation and logistics of goods throughout various industry facilities. These robots optimize workflow, freeing employees for more valuable tasks, ultimately increasing productivity and reducing costs.

Designed to automate the transportation of heavier loads and pallets, the MiR500 has a payload over 1,000 lbs and a footprint of about 4’x3’ ft. This makes the MiR500 a prime candidate for safely maneuvering heavy loads of material through our 80,000 sq ft facility from one destination to the next.

Programming the MiR500 is quite effortless and very user-friendly. With the latest laser-scanning technology and 3D cameras, the robot is able to map out directional pathways using wifi and a programming interface via smartphone, tablet, or PC. Once the facility is mapped out, the robot is able to locate and maneuver around blocked pathways and be programmed with do not go areas and stick to pathways.

Over the next few months, Tool Gauge management and engineers will continue to research and evaluate smaller models of the MiR fleet to determine which departments would best utilize the robot. Material staging at presses, kitting operations, and our future paint department are areas considered to receive MiR robots. After proof of concept (POC) and ROI has been assessed, we will add 3-5 more MiR robots over the next few years.

Factors to be assessed before the first robot is purchased will be size, how to successfully (and safely) integrate the robot into daily operations, ROI, and proof of concept. If the robot is successfully integrated into facility operations, 3-5 more MiR robots will be purchased over the span of a few years.

For more information on MiR and their autonomous mobile robots, click here. Check page continously on our blog page for more information on our automation strategy!

Where are you from, Travis, and how long have you been with Tool Gauge?

I was born and raised in Spanaway, Washington and I’ve been with Tool Gauge full-time for three and a half years now.

You’re currently in the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC) adult apprenticeship program with a focus on Tool and Die, what interested you most about this type of apprenticeship and career path? When did you decide to join?

The Tool and Die apprenticeship attracted me because I really like working with the manual machines like the lathes, mills, and grinders. I find it interesting how a simple block of material can be turned into a very complex part with very tight tolerances – a challenge of sorts that keeps your mind . It’s very hands on instead of letting the machine run the program after pushing a few buttons.

After about two years of working at Tool Gauge, I decided it was better for me to join the apprenticeship program to learn more skill for the trade instead of only relying on, on-the-job training to advance my career.

How long is the apprenticeship and what are your plans after graduating?

In total, the apprenticeship is five years with 15 classes total. I’m currently almost done with my first year of the apprenticeship. After graduating, I plan to continue working at Tool Gauge and hopefully working on more complex jobs around the shop.

Tell us what a typical day looks like for you as an adult apprentice and what type of classes you’re currently enrolled in.

My work schedule is typically from 6:00 am – 4:30 pm then I head to class from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. Classes are one day a week depending on professor availability – this quarter, classes are on Wednesdays. When I don’t have class, I usually head to the gym and get some homework done before falling asleep. As far as classes, I’ve already taken Shop Algebra and Blue Print Reading. I’m on my third class of the program which is Shop Geometry. We’re learning the basics of geometry and how to incorporate it into our typical work day.

Your dad works at Tool Gauge, has he been a mentor during your apprenticeship?

He has been a huge influence with my decision making. Working with my father goes pretty smoothly most of the time. He treats me just like another employee when we’re at work. It’s nice to have him as a boss because I’ve learned the value of taking my time on jobs to make sure what I’m doing is correct and precise. He is always trying to show me different ways to use machines or tools, “try using this, this way” or “maybe this would be more comfortable using it like this.” Him along with all the other guys in our department are very knowledgeable and can help with any questions I have.

Would you recommend an adult apprenticeship with AJAC?

I definitely would recommend joining an apprenticeship program. It’s a great program to learn about all the little things that go into the trade like knowing what type of metals you’re working with, how to program a machine, and even how to use basic math in everyday work.

If you’ve been following along our social media pages and watching our Workzone Cam, you might have noticed some significant progress to the Tool Gauge facility expansion project. We’re excited to say, we have officially occupied Phase 1 of construction!

During July, Washington Patriot Construction wrapped up a few projects to get ready for our scheduled August move-in date along with receiving a very heavy delivery. Washington Crane and Hoist delivered and installed our shiny, new 5- and 15- ton overhead cranes which will assist employees in moving molds from tool storage to designated machines throughout the new facility.

August was one of the busier months as we finalized exterior and interior projects of our new facility in preparation for occupancy starting on the 23rd. Exterior paint was completed earlier in the month as Washington Patriot Construction worked to install gutters, downspouts and bathroom sinks and partitions. Before the floors were sealed, the interior walls got a fresh, white coat of paint and two shiny blue air compressors were placed in the mechanical room.

As soon as the major items were built in, floors were sealed to get ready for final touches including air barrier testing. Tacoma based company, Nexus BEC, performed the air barrier test which measures how much air leaks through the building’s envelope. This type of test is required for all new heated buildings to receive a certificate of occupancy – we passed with flying colors!

August 23rd marked the first day for our Plastics Secondary Operations and Shipping departments to move. Both areas worked throughout the weekend to move product, tools, equipment and work stations, enabling production and assembly to continue as scheduled the following Monday.

Both teams will continue to reorganize their departments to prepare for CNC machines and plastic injection molders to be moved from our current production facility in mid-September. Industrial racks have been built in two areas of the new facility, finished goods and mold maintenance, to better assist teams in their organizational processes. Management has incorporated new LEAN initiatives including designated hardware racks, which will allow for easier accessibility and movability of finished parts and molds through the facility.

As Phase 1 wraps up, we look forward to moving our CNC machines, tool room, and plastic injection molders starting on Sept 19th – Oct. 2nd. All machines will have to be disconnected, moved, then re-connected and calibrated over this specific time period. Once completed, Phase 2 demolition started on Monday, Oct. 7th.

Phase 2 of the expansion is estimated to be completed late 2019. It will include the demolition of our current plastics facility to build our paint department, QA lab, training and lunchroom area, employee lockers and restrooms, offices and facility entrance/lobby. Other important expansion details include:

  • •An additional 80,000 sq. ft. in our plastics division
  • •Expansion of our plastics press size range
  • •Broadened secondary operations, improving flow and ergonomic assembly
  • •Installation of a state-of-the-art vertical paint system
  • •New research and development center
  • •Implementation of multiple collaborative robots (cobots)
  • •An additional 2,000 sq. ft. for CNC machines and equipment within our metals division

As the expansion project concludes, we expect to create over 100 new jobs spanning over the next five years within the Tacoma-Pierce County region. The Work Start Grant from Governor Inslee’s Strategic Reserve Fund will assist in training of new employees and advance the skills of 50 incumbent employees. Employment opportunities are listed on our career page and are continually updated with positions ranging from full-time opportunities in machining, molding, assembly and engineering areas.

Summer is just around the corner and our aerospace manufacturing facility expansion project has made some major headway since our Spring update.

In early March, Washington Patriot Construction lifted and placed 55 tilt walls within three days to set the outer perimeter for the main manufacturing facility in Phase 1. Structural steel was delivered soon after and placed to support the roof and roofing components which were installed throughout March to late April.

While the construction crew built the roof, interior finishes were simultaneously installed including rough-in piping and power for the new HVAC, sprinkler and electrical systems. Restrooms, a research and development room, mechanical, electrical and IT rooms were also built throughout April and May.

As of mid-June, current construction activities include an infiltration trench and storm water structure installations, framing, drywall and insulation – among other projects. Mapping for machine relocation is also currently underway. Washington Patriot Construction superintendent Greg Gran met with Tool Gauge Leadership and plastic division managers to chat about logistics of machine placements, plumbing, and electrical systems as equipment relocation starts in early August.

We look forward to the following expansion project milestones from June to July as we get closer to completing Phase 1 of construction:

  • Roof flashings and gutters
  • Injection molder rack rough-in
  • Exterior Paint
  • Dock leveler install
  • Storefront installation
  • Bridge crane installation
  • Equipment relocation and startup
  • Asphalt prep and pave for employee and customer parking
  • Irrigation installation systems
  • Site furnishings installation

Projected finish date of Phase 1 construction for early September with Phase 2 right around the corner. Phase 2 of the expansion project includes demolition of our current plastics facility to build out our paint room, QA lab, training and lunchroom, employee lockers and restrooms, offices and facility entrance/lobby.

Construction is estimated to be completed late 2019 and will feature a customer lobby with the history of Tool Gauge in a storyboard format, two conference rooms, six offices, 14 work spaces, employee locker area, lunchroom and training area. Other important expansion details include:

  • • An additional 80,000 sq. ft. in our plastics division
  • • Expansion of our plastics press size range
  • • Broadening of our secondary operations to improve flow and ergonomic assembly
  • • Installation of a new, state-of-the-art vertical paint system
  • • An additional 2,000 sq. ft. for CNC equipment within our metals division
  • • Implementation of multiple collaborative robots (cobots)

Once the expansion project is completed, we expect to create over 100 new jobs spanning over the next five years within the Tacoma-Pierce County region. The grant from Governor Inslee’s Strategic Reserve Fund will assist in the training of new employees and advance the skills of 50 incumbent employees. Employee opportunities are on our career page and will include full-time, apprenticeship and internship positions in machining, molding, assembly and engineering areas.
